Our office is in DeBary, so Volusia County is home. We sit down every week with people who work for Volusia County Schools, Volusia County government, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and the cities along the St. Johns River and the coast. Many of them are a few years from DROP, or already in it and not sure what the end of DROP looks like.

We know FRS. We help you understand DROP, check your forms and dates before anything is filed, and connect you with a licensed financial professional when you need one. We can’t promise any outcome, but we can help make sure nothing gets missed.

Why Volusia employees call us

Volusia County has a big K-12 workforce, which means a lot of people who may qualify for the K-12 DROP extension (up to 120 total months for eligible instructional staff, with employer authorization, ending on the last day of a school year). Getting the timing of that extension right is exactly the kind of date-and-form detail we help with. If you work for the school district, our Retiring From a Florida Public School checklist goes deeper.

City workers here are a mixed picture. Some Volusia cities put every employee in FRS, while others only cover certain groups and run their own police or fire plans. Before you plan around DROP, it’s worth confirming which plan you’re actually in.

The deadlines that can’t be undone

  • Your benefit payment option becomes permanent once your first payment is cashed or credited to DROP.4
  • After your DROP end date, you can’t work for any FRS employer for six calendar months, paid or unpaid. Doing so can void your retirement.2
  • FRS must receive your DROP payout form (DP-PAYT) within 60 days of termination, or the balance is paid as a lump sum with 20% withheld.3

Frequently asked questions

I work for the City of Daytona Beach. Am I in FRS?

It depends on your job. FRS lists the City of Daytona Beach as participating for general employees and elected officials. Police and fire employees may be in a separate city plan. Check your pay stub or FRS Online, and we can help you read it.

Can I meet you in person in DeBary?

Yes. Our office is at 301 N Pine Meadow Dr, DeBary, FL 32713, just off I-4 and US-17/92. Most Volusia clients can be here in well under an hour.

What happens if I miss the DROP payout deadline?

If FRS doesn’t receive Form DP-PAYT within 60 days of your DROP termination date, it is required by law to pay your balance as a lump sum with 20% federal tax withheld.3
